Karen is serving as a BOD Member and Director of Koi Organisation International 2009-Present. She teaches Certified Koi Keeper courses, and has written and developed much of K.O.I.’s training materials. She is responsible for the K.O.I. web site, and has written over 500 blog articles. Along with Spike Cover, Karen founded K.O.I. in 2009, and has been a full time volunteer with K.O.I. since then. They have now trained and certified over 300 Koi Health experts all over the world!.
She was a graduate of first Koi Health Advisor Class 2002, and responsible for KHA Continuing Education 2005-2009. Karen was the first Certified Master Koi Health Advisor June 2006, and the first Certified Phish Geek Koi Health Advisor October 2008.
Karen is the English editor for the 3 major books on Koi - “Kokugyo” by Mr. Kodama, published in 2002, “Kokugyo 2” by Mr. Kodama published May 2004, and Kokugyo 3 by Mr. Kodama published in 2017.
Karen is a prolific author and wrote the series of articles called “Born In The USA” published in Koi USA (starting July-Aug 08 to May/June 09). She wrote the series of articles “American Koi Breeder Profiles” published in Koi USA (starting Nov/Dec 05 to May/June 08). She wrote a series called “Artists Corner” for the MAKC monthly magazine (March 07 to Apr 08), as well as the “Meet Your Sponsors” series in the same magazine (04-06).
Karen is well known for organizing over a dozen major wet labs and seminars throughout the country. She organized and ran the 2 Labs at the PNKCA Convention, June 1-3, 2018 and June 19-21, 2015. She taught one of the lab tracks and also gave presentations to the convention. She has organized and taught 1 day Koi Health labs in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Texas over the past 10 years. She organized and ran an 8-hour lab for Koi Professionals in Springfield, MA.
She was the Show Chair for the Pioneer Valley Koi Club Show in 2006, 2008 and 2010. She was the Show Chairperson of the MAKC 16th Annual Koi Show in 2004, as well as the MAKC North and Central Chapters Young Koi Show in 2002.
Karen’s Koi won Grand Champion and Baby Grand Champion at the MAKC 14th Annual Koi Show 2002. She has benched over a dozen Koi shows, and been judge’s recorder at all of them. She has volunteered her time at over 30 Koi Shows, doing all jobs from photographer to running the computer. The has taught and run Water Quality at over dozen Koi shows, and is currently the instructor for K.O.I.’s Show Water Quality Specialist Certification, as well as teaching several other courses in the curriculum.
She was the President of the Pioneer Valley Water Garden & Koi Club – Nov 2009 to Nov 2012. She was the Marketing Manager for the MAKC, Virginia based, July, 2003 – January 1, 2005 (volunteer position).
Karen built her first goldfish pond over 30 years ago, and first Koi pond over 25 years ago. She finished her ‘Ultimate’ Koi pond – 55,000 gallons in 2003.
Karen first visited Niigata, Japan in February of 2003, and then again in March of 2005.
